About

From my first encounter with Latin and French aged 11, then German and Greek aged 13, I’ve been fascinated by how the English language is inextricably linked with other tongues. Teaching Latin in UK state primary and secondary schools, I noticed just how many ‘lightbulb moments’ happened when students realised connections between English and Latin. This has led me over the years to create the suite of resources you can access here on word-roots.com.

After graduating from UCL’s Department of Greek & Latin with a Classics degree, I got pleasantly swept up in the very modern world of online products and digital publishing, working for companies such as United News & Media and Vodafone. A passion for psychology then led me to take a BSc in the subject, where I became very interested in language acquisition and processing. This in turn led me to teaching and right back again to… Latin and Greek.

After a few years teaching in state schools, I developed Maximum Classics, a course designed to teach the Latin language as a vehicle for enhancing English literacy. I then also put together the Word Roots suite of resources for schools who don’t quite have the space in their curriculum to teach Latin as a discrete subject. In 2019, in collaboration with UK charity Classics For All, I launched a series of workshops to introduce teachers and trainee teachers to the word roots approach.
